Microplastic rapid screening method development using automated mineralogy

Microplastic is a significant global problem. The rapid screening of environmental matter highly beneficial to the efficient detection, analysis and mapping microplastic pollution, however many current laboratory techniques test samples are time-consuming often involve hazardous chemicals. SEM-based automated mineralogy (AM) uniquely powerful tool for quantifying chemical, mineral textural properties wide-range sample types. This paper presents an attempt use AM identify quantify within heterogeneous surrounding matrix using QEMSCAN ® (Quantification Evaluation Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy). Here, standard processes adapted develop entirely new methodology, involving novel mounting medium preparation building Species Identification Protocol (SIP) polymer standards. results show potential, although challenges include over-quantification plastic differentiation from natural matter. Additional relate limitations regarding particular system used, which places restrictions on but may be overcome with newer systems. study indicates that, further refinement, have future potential as high-throughput, cost-effective, initial step microplastic-polluted areas accelerate research into establishing solutions.
